2022 Year In Review

James Clear inspired me to begin writing these yearly recaps about my personal progress on my self-growth journey last year. His book, Atomic Habits, inspired me to begin documenting my successes and failures publicly (to a certain extent). I found tremendous personal value in doing this last year and I will continue to do this, in one way or another, for the rest of my life.

Here are the questions I will focus on:

Did I achieve My 2022 goals? (1-10 Scale)

What are my 2023 habits/goals?

What am I most proud of this year?

With that, let’s begin!

What am I most proud of this year?

Easy. I got my pup on December 24, 2021, and raised her from just a little loaf of bread at 7 weeks young - 1-year-old in 2022. I’m extremely proud of all the learning experiences, patience, and good times we had this year.

2023 Quote To LIVE BY:

“How would the person I would like to be do the things i’m about to do?”

#1 Thing I Want To Improve This Year:

Improve goal & habit setting techniques from a macro POV to a micro POV to make a tangible, day-by-day system to follow with consistency all year long. For example, instead of creating a macro goal of “Getting Better Sleep,” I would specify micro goals like:

Get Better Sleep. How Will I Do It?

  • Try To Be In Bed Before 10pm Monday-Friday

  • No Caffeine after 2pm

  • No Eating 3 hours before bed

  • No Social Media in bed

  • Looking Back - 2022 Goal: Continue doing what I’m doing. Build muscle. Double down on what’s working. Play in a tennis league. Exercise my pup every day. Continue playing basketball at the gym. Continue the indoor/outdoor soccer league. Use fitness as a healthy outlet to positively affect my mental health year-round.

    8/10

Bottom line: Pretty damn good. I ran the Hood To Coast Marathon this August and killed it (for my expectations), which may be my greatest fitness feat in the last few years! I played about half a year of Futsal and an entire year of Indoor Soccer, with the exception of a winter injury. I also did a great job of walking, running, and/or playing fetch with the dog almost every single day. I haven’t been playing much basketball at the gym during the second half of the year but would like to do that more in 2023. No Tennis league, I’m still trying to get involved in UTSA but it’s proven difficult with high demand. I did move more towards cardio and lost some of my muscle growth due to running & soccer, but I recently decided to get aggressive with heavy weights and building muscle at the gym. Especially because my work just finished an amazing gym that I’ll be using multiple times per week!

2023 Goal: Talk to a personal trainer and come up with a good plan for the year. Build my fitness knowledge to get better results in less time. Bulk up, go to the gym every day I work in the office (2-3 times/week), continue indoor soccer, beat my times in the Hood To Coast Marathon, and continue to use fitness as a healthy outlet to positively affect my mental health year-round.

  • 2022 Goal: Become a better cook. Diversify my homemade meals, add more vegetables, and cook on a consistent schedule. Don’t make as many excuses to eat fast food. Stay locked in. When I eat fast food, I regret it. Continue cutting down on alcohol. Remember, diet is crucial. Don’t take this goal lightly.

    5/10

Overall, I’m disappointed with my results here. I made quite a bit of progress last year, and couldn’t continue the upward trajectory into 2022. Here’s the good: I still don’t eat out that much; I’m usually cooking things myself, and have significantly reduced my drinking. I have continued to eliminate soda and most junk food (candy, ice cream, sweets in general, chips, etc.) from my diet, which is great. Here’s the bad: I’ve been inconsistent all year. I go on streaks of healthy eating only to stop at Taco Bell on the way home from work 2 days in a row. I need to be better.

2023 Goal: No fast food allowed at all if I’m by myself. Period. No alcohol in January and continue to cut down more and more throughout the year. Eat healthy and see a real difference mentally and physically in 2023.

  • Looking Back - 2022 Goal: Work on myself consistently. Continue to make my inner voice a tool I can use to better myself in every aspect of my life. Pursue my passion projects and meet others that share similar interests. Do a better job of showing my family and friends how important they are to me. Put myself out there and be the most authentic version of myself.

    8/10

The most important relationship is with yourself, and that is stronger than ever going into the New Year. I raised a puppy from 8 weeks old and have built a loving and trusting relationship with her, which I’m proud of. I also have an amazing support system that I need to do a better job of reaching out to consistently. Overall, this was a great year for my relationships and I can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store.

2023 Goal: Don’t let myself get in the way of building relationships and living my life. Keep reinforcing my mental fortress and show the people around me that I care about them.

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 Times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

- Michael Jordan
  • 2022 Goal: Continue to find my confidence; not just internally, but in my external environment. Never let a busy life distract me from the essential work I need to do in this area. Mental health is so important; it’s not okay to ignore it. A healthy mind is a healthy life and it takes a lifetime of work.

    7/10

One day I’m ready to take on the world and do anything and the next I’m taking a 6-mile walk to escape the internal dialogue in my head. Confidence doesn’t show up overnight, and I’ve been working hard to try and break more and more out of my comfort zones. It’s working, but the process is tedious and will continue to take time. When it comes to my professional career, I’ve never been more confident and ready to significantly level up; but if we’re talking about my personal life, it’s a work in progress.

2023 Goal: Take more risks and break down the walls of internal dialogue further. Rewire the brain with good habits and a healthier internal monologue. Don’t be content with comfortability; do things that scare me and use the confidence from that to skyrocket.

  • 2022 Goal: Write a minimum of 1 article per month for my newsletter. I love writing, don’t ignore this part about myself. Also: come up with an idea and write at least one page of a book.

    3/10

Eh, yikes. I’ll be honest - this was one of the larger failures of the year. I didn’t write nearly enough, despite setting myself up to succeed. I made excuses because of being slammed at work or too tired and instead need to make concrete habits. I’ll be better.

2023 Goal: Write more articles. Come up with a plan to focus on one or two things in-depth. Create at least 1 niche website.

  • 2022 Goal: Go on another vacation out of the country. Don’t let new responsibilities hold me back from exploring the world while I’m young.

    10/10

Oh man, this was a massive win for 2022. I took a massive Europe trip (Amsterdam, Prague, & Germany) that was almost 3 weeks long and it was fucking amazing. I also went to Colorado, Arizona, and Austin. Not only that, but in Feb 2023 I’m going on another massive international trip to Thailand! Killing it in the traveling game and I don’t plan on slowing down any time soon. I made this happen with a new puppy this year too (s/o to my parents for watching her so much…)

2023 Goal: Keep traveling more and more; make it a priority and don’t let any excuses stand in my way. Keep living life to the fullest.

  • 2022 Goal: Run it back. Use data to formulate better, more consistent habits every single day. You can’t improve what you don’t know!

    3/10

I tried and failed to stay consistent after March. This year, I will be trying to use better templates for daily tracking.

2023 Goal: I mean, simple. Track habits. Come on now, it’s not that hard.

  • 2022 Goal: Continue iterating my process to be more efficient and better at my job. Don’t get complacent and continue to level up my skills and show the world what I can do with hard work and motivation. Go out of my way to build relationships with coworkers and put myself in the best possible situation to be successful. This includes my side passions.

    10/10 Career, 4/10 Side Passions

Killing it at work. Leveling up like crazy, going into the office more consistently, building great relationships with my coworkers, and showing everyone the experience and skills I have. It feels good. As for side passions, again I’ve been inconsistent. No excuses, I have a ton of ideas and just need to execute them.

2023 Goal: Get a big promotion (title and money) and double down on my side passions.

  • 2022 Goal: Do better. I love reading and I’m not proud of how few pages I got through in 2021. Read for fun. It’s as simple as that.

    2/10

Outright fail. I only read on vacation and rarely on the weekends. Inexcusable. I need to find more time for what I love because I know it makes me happy.

2023 Goal: Read at minimum 10 books and aim for 20-30.

Time To Kill 2023!
